Organization Brief
The main decision making bodies of RISEAP are the General Assembly and Executive Committee.
The General Assembly, which consists of the representative of all Muslim organizations in RISEAP, is held every two years. So far there have been ten General Assemblies since the first was held in June 1982 in Kuala Lumpur. Other venues have been Kuching, Singapore, Sydney, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur.
At the 1980 inaugural conference, Almarhum Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (Prime Minister of Malaysia 1957-1970) was unanimously elected as RISEAP’s first President. On stepping down in1988, he was succeeded by Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud (Chief Minister of Sarawak), who was unanimously elected.
As well as the President, the Executive Committee consists of Deputy President, four Vice Presidents, one of whom is head of the Women’s Movement, six elected members, two representing each of the region’s three zones, two nominated members representing the Women’s Movement, the Honorary Secretary General, and three additional members appointed by the President in accordance with the Constitution.
The RISEAP Secretariat, based in Kuala Lumpur, is headed by the Hon Secretary General who is assisted by the Treasurer, Executive Secretary, and eight staff.
With effect 1984, each member country is invited to send a women representative to the General Assembly, where a specific women’s conference is held as part of the general program. There are Muslim women’s organizations from Australia, Fiji, Indonesia and New Zealand being members of the Women’s Movement, which is an integral part of RISEAP.
A zonal system is formally introduced in 1993, dividing the RISEAP region into three zones: North, South and Central. This system is being developed to improve the communication and coordination between members.
