JAKIM Conducts Forum on Ramadhan
Putrajaya, Malaysia 18 August 2009. The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) organized a special forum on Ramadan, at JAKIM Auditorium, on 18 August 2009 as to provide Islamic understanding and awareness, the importance and purposes of Ramadan especially on how to observe fasting as prescribed by Islam. The Forum, attended by about 500 people, was officially opened by Minister at Prime Minister Office, Senator Maj Gen (Rtd) Dato Jamil Khir Bin Hj Baharom who was accompanied by the Director General of JAKIM, Dato’ Hj Wan Mohamad bin Dato’ Sheikh Abdul Aziz.
In his opening remarks, the minister stressed that Muslims should be patient and work harder during the month. He cited the Badr War as an example when Muslim army waged during Ramadan and won the war despite having a small number of troops. This is to show that fasting is not a barrier for Muslims to work harder during the Holy Month.
The Forum was part of JAKIM activities with the aim to provide true Islamic teachings to the Muslims in the country particularly during a special occasion of Ramadan, Eid Fitr and Eid Adha. JAKIM also plays a significant role in conducting and monitoring da’wah activities in the country. Three prominent Muslim scholars who were guest speakers at the forum gave their views and guidance on how to observe fasting as enjoined by Islam. Several topics were discussed including on how to maintain good health and diet, to control the passions, food preparation, and the importance of tarawih prayers. The speakers stressed that fasting is obligatory and thus must be observed by Muslims both male and female. The purpose and spirit of the month is to get closer to the Creator and it is also a practice for self-discipline, sacrifice and sympathy for less fortunate Muslims. Besides, the speakers reminded that Muslims should not be prodigal during the month.
The speakers were Dr Syarifah Hayati Syed Ismail of Academy Islam, University of Malaya, Dr Suhaimi Abd Halim of Kampong Baru Islamic Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur and Ust Ismail Hashim Junaidi from the Ministry of Women, Social and Family Development.
