NATIONAL PRESIDENT OF FIJI MUSLIM LEAGUE – HAFIZUD DEAN KHAN
HAFIZUD DEAN KHAN was born in Suva (1950) and educated at Assemblies of God primary School and Marist Brothers’ High School. He completed his Tertiary Education in Calgary, Canada. Graduate and graduated in Business Management (Finance). He is married with two children. He worked for 12½ years as Commercial and Corporate Banker, both in Fiji and Internationally, Citibank NA and Bank of British Columbia (now Hong Kong Shanghai Bank). He returned to Fiji in 1982 to commence own business, first as Financial and Business Consultant and than later as Developer.
He is currently the Chairman of Hexagon Group of Companies. The Group owns/operates a number of Hotels/Serviced Apartments (offering in total 400 units) and other Commercial Businesses: including the Hexagon International Hotel Villas & Spa, Melanesian Hotel, Grand West’s Villas at Wailoaloa Nadi, Suva Motor Inn, Grand Eastern Hotel Labasa and Seashell at Momi, Nadi, Fiji Islands. The Group is currently developing tourism and commercial properties to the tune of F$30 million dollars.
He has served as Director/Advisor to various Private companies and Government/Statutory bodies. Among other positions, he has served for 5 years on Fiji Development Bank Board, was the Chief Administrator of Nausori Town Council (when it was dissolved) 1983/84, chaired an inquiry into Housing Authority in 1995, served as the President’s nominee on 1990 constitutional committee. He has served as Board member and then as Deputy Chairman of Fiji Electricity Authority, also served as Chairman of its subsidiary Megapower Ltd.
He was on the Board of Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd. (FSC) from 1994, was appointed Vice Chairman in 1997 and appointed Chairman in April 1999 and served until June 2004. He has been a member of Fiji National Tourism Council. He served as a member of the National Advisory Committee for Multi Ethnic Affairs and also, the National Reconciliation Committee. He was a member of the Labour Advisory Board and has also served as a member of the Public Service Commission Consultative Forum on the Review of Government Machinery in July 2005.
He was appointed to the Senate in the Parliament of Fiji as the Prime Minister’s Nominee in July 2005, and again in June 2006 when he served as the Vice-President of Senate, and Deputy Head of Government Business. In May 2007 he was awarded the “Officier De L’Ordre National Du Merite” by the President of the Republic of France for his services to the Business Private Sector in the Region.
HAFIZUD DEAN KHAN has been the National President of Fiji Muslim League since March 2001 to date. Under his leadership, FML continue to serve the Muslim umah of Fiji with great dedication and devotion. While the main focus is the pursuit of knowledgeable and skilled umah, FML is also committed in looking after the welfare of the needy through the collection and distribution of zakat.
