IIUM New Female Rector
Prof Datuk Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin has been appointed as a new Rector of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) on 10 August 2011, to replace Prof Dato’ Sri Dr Syed Arabi Idid, whose term as rector expired on June 1, he held the post since 2006. Prof Dr Zaleha is the first woman ever appointed to top post at IIUM.
Prior to this appointment, she served IIUM as a lecturer of law and later on was appointed as dean of Ahamad Ibrahim Kulliyah of Law. She spent two years since 2009 as deputy director-general at Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) in Kuala Lumpur, one of the most prestigious Islamic institution in Malaysia. Prof Datuk Dr Zaleha Kamaruddin holds a doctoral degree in Law from the University of London, besides writing books and articles, she is also active in giving services to both government departments and non-government organizations in Malaysia.
Since the establishment of IIUM in 1983, four scholars were appointed to hold the post as rector, the first one was Tan Sri Prof Dr Muhammad M Abdul Rauf (1983-1988) followed by Dato’ Dr Abdul Hamid A. Abu Sulaiman (1988-1998), Tan Sri Prof Dr Mohd Kamal Hasan (1999-2006) and Prof Dato’ Sri Dr Syed Arabi Idid (2006-2011).
IIUM has close working relations with RISEAP particularly in area of da’wah activities. Since 2000, RISEAP has been conducting various Islamic courses for both male and female at IIUM with a full support and cooperation of IIUM.
