International Conference on Global Movement of Moderates was held in Kuala Lumpur from 17-19 January 2012, with the aim to promote moderation by rejecting all forms of extremism that caused all sorts of problem facing the world today.

Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri presided over the official opening of the 3-day conference which was attended by 350 delegates from 70 countries. In his opening address, Prime Minister Najib said that the world is facing various extremes, particularly terrorism, wars, natural disasters and financial crises and it is a duty for everyone to choose the best way to deal with these problems. He added that the real divide is not between and non-, or between the developed and developing worlds, but it is between moderates and extremists. He also stressed that moderation could solve not only the problem of violent extremism but could guide people through the global economic crisis.

Prime Minister Najib also proposed to set up an institute for promoting moderation and balance of life, known as Wasatiyyah Institute at very soon. Besides, he launched the Global Movement of Moderates Foundation (GMMF), as a centre for data and information collection on the subject for anyone who are interested to fight against extremism.

About 50 speakers/experts on various fields were invited to give lectures to the participants. Among others were Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tun Musa Hitam, Dr Ahmad Mohamad Ali Al Madani, President of Islamic Development bank (IDB), Dr Maurits S. Berger, Dr Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary General, Prof Ayatollah Sheikh Mahdi Hadavi Tehrani, President of Porch of Wisdom Cultural Institution and Ian D. Edge, .

The conference was organized by IIUM Alumni Association, with the theme “ In Pursuit of an Enduring and Just Peace”.
